Rapper/producer Kanye West`s second album, LATE REGISTRATION, incredibly lives up to expectations following his universally acclaimed debut, THE COLLEGE DROPOUT, which took the art of sampling to a new plateau. Here, for example, "Gold Digger" features a sample of the legendary Ray Charles alongside actor Jamie Foxx in Oscar-reprising character as Charles. "Addiction" pairs a frenetic African beat with a stuttering, singular use of a snippet of Etta James crooning "My Funny Valentine," while "Diamonds From the Sierra Leone" teams the majestic Bond glory of Shirley Bassey`s "Diamonds Are Forever" with perfectly subtle Miami bass to explosive effect. All the while, West pulls lyrics out of his rhyme bag at a fever pitch, tackling hefty topics like civil war in Africa and the impact of drugs on leading Black minds.Throughout the album, West merely continues to perfect his craft, slowing tracks down and speeding them up into an awe-inspiring mosaic. While his MC style is often discounted as being of secondary importance, he shines when put up against the best in the game, as with Common on the bluesy "My Way Home" or Nas on the lush "We Major." And in the spirit of Bob Dylan, West knows how to make the most of a very original voice. LATE REGISTRATION is ample proof of West`s staying power. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Over The Rhine: Karin Bergquist (vocals, acoustic guitar); Linford Detweiler (various instruments).DISCOUNT FIREWORKS is a 15-track anthology of Over the Rhine`s tenure on the Back Porch label, spanning the years 2001 to 2005. Covering tracks from FILMS FOR RADIO, the double-disc masterpiece OHIO, and THE DRUNKARD`S PRAYER, this set is a solid overview of the Cincinnati quintet`s brand of largely acoustic adult-alternative pop. However, while longtime fans will appreciate the sole new song, "Last Night On Earth," DISCOUNT FIREWORKS is clearly aimed more for the casual fan or newcomer. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Recording information: 1965 - 1966.This 2006 twofer compiles Merle Haggard`s very first solo ventures, discounting JUST BETWEEN THE TWO OF US (co-billed to Bonnie Owens). While 1965`s STRANGERS finds the young Bakersfield country singer still getting his musical bearings, it features a number of excellent singles, including the woeful "You Don`t Have Far to Go" and a rollicking cover of Ernest Tubb`s "Walking the Floor Over You." SWINGING DOORS AND THE BOTTLE LET ME DOWN marks the emergence of a more confident Hag, with the title calling attention to two of the record`s finest tunes--the honky-tonk ode "Swinging Doors" and the classic "The Bottle Let Me Down," a woozy lament about an unsuccessful attempt to drink away a broken heart. This release also includes alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks, making it an excellent value and an essential collection for Haggard fans. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. By the time Love was creating what`s widely considered their crowning achievement, FOREVER CHANGES, the band was unraveling. After a nearly two year absence Arthur Lee returned in 1969 with a new line-up, introduced on this album. What had previously been an ensemble with considerable input from more than one writer and singer (the importance of Bryan MacLean on Love`s first three albums cannot be discounted) had now become more-or-less a one-man show. Lee`s new rhythm section and lead guitarist made for a solid band, however.Lee took advantage of the new sound and started the album off with "August," a powerful blast (introducing and contrasting the quieter body of the song) heretofore unheard on a Love record. The new band had shifted away from the tightly arranged structures that previously tied them to such Los Angeles cohorts as The Byrds and consequently had more in common with the San Francisco ballroom bands, with longer solos and more emphasis on grooves.
